Radio Hour Celebrates Second Anniversary
posted 10/02/2009 by Courtney Ledbetter

In October 2007, the River City Radio Hour presented its first performances.  Over the last two years the Radio Hour has become the center of Waynesboro’s Third Friday event.  The special anniversary show will feature many of the performers who have helped the Radio Hour become a popular Friday night entertainment for an ever larger audience.

The Boogie Kings led by Richard Adams was the Radio Hour’s first “studio band”.   Adams with his wry sense of humor continues to serve as the Radio Hour’s MC. Accompanying Adams are the keyboard wizard William Hayes and the percussionist par excellent, J.T. Fauber.

Dr. Levine and the Dreaded Blues Lady Lorie Strother return to celebrate the second anniversary.  Critics call Strother ‘a real blues woman [who’s] got soul.” Dr. Levine is a scholar/guitarist who excels in the slide and finger picking styles of the Piedmont and Mississippi Delta Blues. Together they bring an authentic voice and style to the Blues.

A regular on the Radio Hour is Waynesboro’s own Lady of Laughter, Marsha Howard. She will bring her own bag of laughter as well as hosting the second River City Radio Joke Contest.  Potential comedians drop their names in the bowl. Three names are drawn during the performance and the jokesters incorporated into the show. All jokes must be PG rated.  A finalist will perform at December Radio Hour.  For more detail, call 943-9999 or write director@waynetheatre.org.

Llyn Walker, jazz vocalist, was the featured performer at the first River City Radio Hour.  Over the last two years, she has performed as a singer and actor in the serials. She returns this month in both roles.

The second chapter of Waynesboro’s Got Talent: The Jingle Bell Jubilee, written by Elizabeth Massie and Barbara Spilman Lawson and sponsored by Stone Soup Books and Café will complete the evening. In the last installment, a local group of “artistes” agreed to mount a December talent show to raise funds for a gigantic bust of Mad Anthony Wayne and a sky lift at the Waynesboro landfill. Further complications arose when they accepted financial support from a newcomer conditioned on featuring his “Little Terry” as the star.

The merchant of the month is Mac Jones of Barnwell & Jones Realtors.

The October 16th Anniversary Performances will be at the Blue Ridge Christian Fellowship at 329 Main Street in downtown Waynesboro. The Radio Hour is presented at 6:30 pm and 8 pm. Admission is “Pay what you will, but Pay.” Audiences are urged to come early for the popular 6:30 show since it often sells out, or plan on attending the 8:00 show.

The River City Radio Hour is a production of the Waynesboro Cultural Commission and The Wayne Theatre Alliance.
